[I] Um, Again with Stacie in England.... [message #273003] Mo, 22 Mai 2006 00:56

Okay, now that I'm done with school for a few weeks, I can think.

I'm arriving on Sunday, August 12 at a sort of breakfasty hour. I'm starting
off by visiting with Alec & family for a few days. While visiting with Alec,
we plan to see Graham's fetish fair in London, Jane Austen's grave &
environs, and Oxford. Oxford is a bit general, but I haven't had a chance to
figure out what about Oxford I want to see.

I expect I'll be hanging around with Alec until at least the middle of the
15th, for many reasons, but not least that he's the chap who persuaded me to
come over.

That leaves a couple of days before the con. Gid mentioned Wales, and I
think Jenny Delaney mentioned Bath. If you'd like to firm up, confirm, or
deny knowledge of actual plans for that, let me know.

Probably good dates for a London meet would be the 15th, 16th, maybe the
17th. Comments?

Then there's the con. I would prefer to travel there in company with someone
or several someones.

After the con, my only firm plans are to visit with Philippa in Nottingham
and Andrew in Manchester.

I need to be back at the airport for a noon flight out from LGW on Saturday
the 26th.

Budget is a consideration; I just need to be semi-conservative with my
spending.

I'd also like comments on what I should definitely bring, and what I might
think of bringing but won't need.

AS I recall, your plan was Philippa first then me, so you'd be needing to
get from Manchester to Gatwick for 10am? (I'm assuming a 2hr check in)

It's just if you'd like, I can check ahead for train times

An umbrella. Manchester has well deserved reputation for being rainy.
There's even a song about it.

All the colleges you can manage. The shop in St. Aldates' opposite
Christchurch that is the model for the shop in "Through the Looking Glass".
Port Meadow and Binsey (which has a Saxon Church almost unspoiled), as a
walk to The Trout for a drink, but no-one can afford lunch there so don't
plan on that. Blenheim Palace, which is just outside Woodstock about ten
miles from Oxford, and Woodstock itself. The enormous, hideous Victorian
houses along the Banbury and Woodstock roads, if any are left; they were all
built at the same time when Oxford academics were at last allowed to marry
without having to wait until they became Master (or whatever) of their
college. Keble College in Parks Road, built by the pre-Raphaelites en masse
and looking like it. Magdalene Bridge and Christchurch Meadows, Ship St.

These seem to be mostly architecture, which may not interest you and
anyway, while it seems unlikely that even Blair's lot would have demolished
any of them since I left, one can't be sure, so: Martyr's Memorial in St.
Giles, built to commemorate Cranmer, Latimer and Ridley. The original
Blackwell's in Broad St., and a drink next door at the White Horse. Any of
the villages and small towns surrounding Oxford, especially those called
Chipping <foo>, and the countryside on the way to them and between them -
there should be some coppices somewhere there. The Downs on the way to
Swindon, and the White Horse (the chalk one, not another pub).

I'm homesick. I think I had better go into the mountains here soon and
give the breathtaking beauty all around a good looking at. Or go downtown
and admire the healthy, well-behaved pigeons.

Seems logical to work northward from the con. Although possibly if you are
AT the con, might make sense to ravel north together and then back
southward.

We can probably manage a couple of days, especially if there's anyone else
local wants to say hi who didn't meet you at the con (Jester?). You
probably won't have to spend too much cash, though it'd be nice to eat out
at once (doesn't have to be anywhere flashy, though I'd rather avoid McD's

As they are during the week, they are emminently possible, can't confirm being in

This is the point in my voyages at which I would generally fall into a
Wetherspoons, if only because I can have a bottle of Westons cider
along with my whatever-looks-vaguely-edible-on-the-menu.

They're tolerable, but I tend to find the food so-so and unless they've
lucked into a beer I really like the selection's often not as good as I'd
like either. Plus if you're in Nottingham then you may as well wander the
extra distance to somewhere like the Bell Inn.

I generally consider them to be the McDonald's of the pub world: if
nothing else, you know what you're going to get. And that it'll take
*ages* to get to you, during which time you can commune with a bottle
or two of vaguely decent cider.

I don't pay much attention to the beer range, but I hear tell that
they're not famed for the quality of their keeping, not to mention
their habit of forgetting to turn labels around so you can see what's
on and what isn't.

Does it serve decent cider, though. ;-)

Whatever you want to do. I've booked the whole week 21-25 August off work so
you can come to M'cr I'm happy to work around dates Phillippa may have

I am attending the con as you know, so going back to Manchester together is
doable.
Currently planning on leaving Monday evening after the Closing Ceremony but
if you wanted to stay till Tuesday morning then I'm sure I can change my
hotel booking
>>> I need to be back at the airport for a noon flight out from LGW on
>>> Saturday the 26th.
>>>

>Yes, thanks!

I have done a quick check online.

Note that the website only goes up to 3 months in advance so it doesn't do
26/08/06 et so I asked for the preceding Saturday (19/08/06) as I suspect
the times won't be that different. I shall of course try to remember this
weekend when the proper times should be available

Times assume a 2 hr check in so you need to arrive approx 10am at Gatwick
Airport. I'm afraid it's a VERY early stat.

Manchester 0520
Watford Junction arr 0757
Watford Junction dep 0811
London Gatwick 0922

Manchester 0609
London Euston 0848
Underground to Victoria
London Victoria 0930
London Gatwick 1000

Manchester 0644
Watford 0856
Watford 0911
Gatwick 1022

Price: £62.30 GBP

I'm gong to make a suggestion, now. Have you considered flying from
Manchester to Gatwick?

www.manchesterairport.co.uk has the following flight
Manchester 0810
Gatwick 0915
It gives a price of £38.00 GBP

I suspect that even with a taxi to the airport (bear in mind I have no car)
this may work out cheaper than the train. I can't imagine it being more
expensive

Have no idea of check in time as all the website say is it'll be on your
ticket but I imagine check in for domestic flights would be no more than
hour. It's a British Airways flight also and they have a new online check in
which I imagine would cut down this time substantially. Don't know if you'd
need to book though www.BA.com to be able use this facility though and the
price may be different on their site. But I suggest, Mistress, that's worth
looking into.

Sorry to throw all this at you. I know it's a lot to digest but you did ask

Oh and, erm, sorry for the spiders under the sofa on afp. Well you would
expect to find some there. And I couldn't resist teasing

All the best Stacie. Looking forward to meeting you and having you stay
